Hi
Does anyone know if the raised ground area on Jean Stansfield park (corner of Park Rd and Station Rd) was an old air raid shelter? we were told it was when i played on there whilst i was a teen in the early 80's. And it would seem to fit the size and shape.

Russ

Hi Russ,
I asked my mother about this she lived just nearby in Fylde road from about 6 months after the war started. She thinks not, she dosent recall a shelter there, and recalls that Poulton was particularly lax on air raid procedures compared to where she was in Grimsby for the first six months of the war. They were not allowed any light to show at all in Grimsby, with Air Raid Wardens and Police always on the lookout for light emitting offenders, after 6 months of the war she moved to Fylde Road, and travelled back on the train most nights arriving at 11pm getting off the train at Poulton curve from where she worked at the GPO in Blackpool. She walked right past the park every night, there was usually plenty of light showing from houses through cracks in the windows or under doors, and it was like a different world to the very regular air raids on Grimsby, she dosent recall there being an air raid centre in the park at all. Hope this helps. Regards, Simon.

Hi, I grew up in Poulton and played on the park many many times. The raised mound of which you write was created in about 1965 when a structure similar to a castle was erected for children to play on. The structure didn`t last very long and the mound was left after the concrete was removed.

My Grandad was an air raid warden . He lived on Park road, very near to the Station street end. My mother said there was a shelter close by, but I'm not exactly sure where. She has passed away now so can't tell me where it was.
