Hi Steve,

Stay tuned...I'll get back to you on this one...unless somebody else here gets back to you first, of course. (Well...when I say 'I'll get back to you on this one', what I'll actually do is ask around. I'm not even sure whereabouts on Park Road the Pelham Mount Club is, or was, to be honest. But one of the old codge...er...that is, somebody of my acquaintance might know, so keep your fingers crossed.)

It's a pity John Shorrocks, Wyre Archaeology's original treasurer, isn't still alive, to be honest. He'd been compiling a list of all the WWII instalations around the Fylde. I wonder what became of that?

Hold on...just found this under Bowling Greens (don't ask me why) on the web:

Pelham Mount Club (?,?/?/?/?,?,?) SD314356
Park Road, Blackpool - Whole site bulldozed in 1998.

Probably not much chance of the air raid shelter having survived that, I suspect.

I think the site is now occupied by a child care centre. If I recall correctly, the imposing wall that surrounded the site is still there, but the club itself was knocked down to be replaced by the new building.

I remember someone telling me that when it was at its height, the club had sufficient clout for Tetley's brewery to ship ales all the way from Leeds whilst all the other Tetley outlets around Blackpool were served by the Walker's brewery that Tetleys had taken over in Warrington.

Chris,

Cheers for that. As always, any photographs (whether old or modern) are always welcome...so if anybody reading this knows of any, you know what to do.

Hi again the air raid shelter was behind the existing bus shelter, you can still see the different bricks they used to block it uo.This would mean it must be underneath the old carpark site. steve conchie

Steve,

I'm still trying to figure out where on Park Road we're talking about. Chris obviously knows, although, judging by all the questions marks in the 'eastings' from that Bowling Greens website, whoever compiled their list was in the dark as much as I am.

Joolz,

In that case there really isn't much left of it. If you see one of the cement mixers suddenly drop out of sight with a loud thud, you'll know what's happened to it.

In the meantime Steve, here's the link to those photographs Joolz mentioned:

Brian,

If I've got the right place, it was on the left a few hundred yards after Palatine Road as you are travelling south on Park Road.

Chris

Chris,

It definitely sounds like the area they've just bulldozed and are building the new 'campus' on then.
