As I mentioned in a recent post on the General Forum, the Childrens Homes on Moor Street in Kirkham are now being demolished to make way for an extension to the Pear Tree House School. They were built in 1914 as the Cottage Homes, on the site of the second Kirkham workhouse, when a new one for the Fylde Union was built in Wesham. After the 1956 Hungarian uprising some refugees were placed there in Kirkham, and I remember we (Weshamers), had to keep out of 'their territory' in Kirkham Wood, which was the Sunnybank House grounds before the estate was built. This was as well as avoiding the the Kirkhamers on Towns Hill. Great days!!

I remember during the early years of the war , the wrought iron railings which fronted the cottages were sawn off as metal for the war effort . This was also true for all iron railings in the town . T he children from the cottages went to the local schools and we're beautifully turned out and impeccabley behaved . I know of many who went on to have made fine careers and excellent citizens . The principal was a Mr Percy Billington
,a well thought off and much respected guy .
