Minutes of Wyre Archaeology Group Meeting 19 September 2012

Present: D Berry, C Clayton, B Culshaw-Phillips, K Emery, Pat Emery, D Hampson, H Ricco, B Rigby, Ed Shone, G Thornton.
Guests: J Fairclough, S Lamsing, J Amos, J Cass
1. Chairman welcome: In absence of Dave Hammond, Chris Clayton took the chair and welcomed everyone and especially guests to the meeting.

2. Apologies for absence: received from Frank Smith, Dave Hammond, Carlo Ricco, Dominic Whalley, Seb Whalley.

3. Minutes of last meeting: Minutes of 15 August were approved as correct.

4. Matters arising: a) Big Dig – The meeting reviewed the rationale for the proposed Big Dig on the site of Bourne Hall. DB reported that he had tried to make contact with the organisation responsible for the site but that the person he needed to speak to had been on holiday and was now off sick. After further discussion it was proposed and resolved that the dig should be rescheduled for the 4 days 18 to 21 October and that final details would be sent out shortly beforehand with a review of arrangements at the meeting on 17 October. b) Meeting venue – Thanks to the efforts of Barbara and Hilary, the portakabin had been restored to a fit state to hold meetings.

5. Treasurer’s Report: Gary reported that with yet another car boot contribution from Barbara and Hilary the account now stood at £821.21. A vote of thanks to Barbara and Hilary was proposed and resolved.

6. Executive Committee: None

7. Correspondence: DH reported that two a letter had been received from the CBA confirming our status as an affiliate organisation. Following an enquiry by email, Peter Iles had sent further information in respect of the site at Bourne Hall.

8. Excavation Update: The Bourne (hill) Enigma. Gary presented photos recorded on CD ROM, produced by Brian Hughes, that illustrated the work on Bourne Hill over the past several years. Members agreed that this was very informative since the photos showed the progress of various excavations and the variety of finds which ranged from possible Romano-British potsherds to relatively modern artefacts. Brian Rigby had also produced a 3-D model of the ’roundhouse’ excavation showing the location of revealed stake/postholes.

9. AOB: a) Attention was drawn to an item appearing in ‘Thornton Community News’ that described the work of WAG. b) Dave H distributed to each member a number of ‘business cards’ that he had had printed with the society’s contact details.

10. Date of next meeting: Wednesday 17 October at 7.00pm in Portakabin.
