Minutes of Wyre Archaeology Group Meeting 15 Feb 2012

Present: P Ashman, D Berry, C Clayton, B Culshaw-Phillips, K Emery, D Hammond, D Hampson, B Rigby, H Ricco, E Shone, G Thornton, S Tingle.
Guests: P Asher,
1. Chairman welcome: Chris welcomed everyone to the February meeting.

2. Apologies for absence: received from Pat Emery, Carlo Ricco, Seb Whalley, Frank Smith.

3. Minutes of last meeting: A correction was noted that T Lightbown was not present at the January meeting. Subject to this correction the minutes were approved.

4. Matters arising: a) CBAMembership: DH reported that he was awaiting a reply from Dot Boughton as to whether she would be willing to ‘support’ our application for affiliate membership. He would submit the application when this was confirmed.
b) Meeting venue: Gail had agreed to our continued use of the room in the Dance Studio. A nominal fee of £10 per meeting was agreed since she rented the studio from James Parr.
c) Bruna Hill: Chis and Dave B had visited this site and met with the owner of the house in question. They felt that the garden area does contain archaeology but that it had been disturbed by modern gardening and therefore would probably be unproductive. It was also possible that previous owners of the house had been buried (legitimately!) in the garden therefore this would also make excavation inadvisable. However it was noted that there is a clear line of site from the hill on which the house is located to Greenhalgh Castle which was besieged during the Civil War. It is possible that it would have been within artillery range of the hill so it would be interesting to see if there might be any related archaeology. The owner of the neighbouring field had been identified and, in his absence, his wife had been contacted with a view to getting permission to dig some test pits. She had agreed to pass this request on. Ken mentioned that Brian Hughes had done some research on Bruna Hill, possibly recorded in his blog.
d) Display Case: Now the display case had bee established in the museum there is a need to populate it with some finds. Chris suggested that members might be interested in spending some time working on this. He offered to email members to gauge interest.

5. Treasurer’s Report: Gary reported that the society’s account now stood at £638.37.

6. Executive Committee: See Below.

7. Correspondence: DH reported that he had contacted Peter Iles to invite him to support our CBA application and Peter had agreed. DH had also updated him on recent activities. DH also contacted Dot Boughton but had not yet received a response.

8. Excavation Update: There was a brief discussion on possible future sites for excavation. These included two areas on Bourne Hill (small ‘plateau’ on lee side and the mound area by the ****), Highgate Lane, Bruna Hill and the recently-observed circular feature on Pilling foreshore. This last had been viewed by Dave B who reported that it was possibly inaccessible due to mud. It was agreed that an Executive Committee meeting would be convened to discuss this before the next meeting. The question of site management would also be an agenda item for the Exec.

9. AOB: Gary gave a brief slide show of aerial photos he had taken recently on a flight with Frank. These included shots of Bourne Hill and of Bruna Hill.

10. Date of next meeting: Wednesday 21 March at 7.00pm in Dance Studio.
