Guests: P Asher,
1. Chairman welcome: Chris welcomed everyone to the first meeting of 2012 wishing all a Happy New Year. A particular welcome was extended to our guest speaker Dr Barbara Lang of Edge Hill University.

2. Apologies for absence: received from Seb (via B Rigby).

3. Minutes of last meeting: No formal minutes were recorded since this had been the Christmas Hot Pot supper. It was noted that this had again been an exceptional meal although numbers attending had been small. Thanks were expressed to James’ Parr.

4. Matters arising: None

5. Treasurer’s Report: Gary reported that the society’s account now stood at £618.37 having payed £80 for the meal.

6. Executive Committee: None

7. Correspondence: Gary had received a notice from CBA regarding group membership. This was passed to DH for attention. Chris reported receipt of a letter from Peter Wright of Blackpool VIth Form College. Peter had explained that he would not be able to participate in any Big Dig this year but also went on to describe how several recent students who had taken part in our activities had now successfully gained places at university to study Archaeology and related subjects. One had been asked specifically at interview about her experiences with Wyre Archaeology.

8. Excavation Update: Due to poor weather no further activity had been possible at Bourne Hill. Further digs are suspended until spring.

In regard to future digs, Dave Berry informed the group of discussions he had had with a local historian about a potential site outside Garstang where there had been a variety of rumours about ancient burials and battles. Chris and Dave would visit the site for further investigation.

The schedule of activities for 2012 will be an agenda item in February.

9. AOB: Gary announced that there were a number of spare copies of Harris & Hughes books. Hilary and Barbara informed the group that the display case in the museum had now been set up and that further exhibits could be accommodated for example Frank’s garden finds. A description of finds would be needed and this could be laminated (Ken having offered his laminator). The WAG leaflets also need updating with new contact details.

DH to investigate use of room in Dance School.

Dr Lang gave a very fascinating talk that described the nature and causes of fluctuations in sea levels over the past several millennia, drawing attention to probable local conditions and the evidence for these including the recently exposed submerged forest. She also described the impact on climate and environment of both naturally-occurring factors and human factors. One conclusion from Barbara’s research was that the Neolithic/Bronze Age human population in NW England was probably larger than previously believed and its impact on the environment consequently much greater. The members expressed warm thanks for her talk.

10. Date of next meeting: Wednesday 15 February at 7.00pm.
