I'm sure we've all seen something and thought, 'better take a photo of that before it disappears', only to find it has gone next time you pass. I certainly have. Kirkham Motor Co. (Harold's garage) which was opposit the Hillside on Preston Street is just one. Just up the road from the Hillside, at the top of the hill on the right is a row of 19th century weavers cottages.
They aren't in any danger as it is now a conservation area, but one of the cottages has not had the front door steps replaced, (I'm surprised the H&S police havn't been round). What I wonder is, what wore the step more, clog irons or donkey stone?

Frank,
Probably some 'reet proud Lancashire Lass from yesteryear' getting a bit overzealous with her 'well-scrubbed doorstep'. Possibly the previous owners had an extremely fat cat.
It's good to see that Kirkham's got the sense to place a conservation order on these Victorian cottages. My house in Fleetwood looks just like one of these, but the powers that be, rather than recognising the historical charm of such buildings, seem to want to flatten the whole lot and turn the entire town into one big skateboarding park/luxury apartment block for some unknown reason. Probably because none of the planners behind the so-called Master Plan actually live here, I suspect.

Martyn,
They can start by throwing out the drunken ****holes who were having a party down Victoria Street last night until three in the morning. That'd be money well spent.

I strongly suspect it was one of those parties where you didn't get an invite unless you could supply the smack by the half pound. The repeatedly chanted phrase, "Y' big fat f***** puff!" echoing around the houses into the small hours, accompanied by the sort of piercing laughter normally associated with Pendle Hill on Halloween, tends to suggest that it wasn't a gathering of high-spirited intellectuals.
