WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY HEALTH & SAFETY ON SITE
Guidance for workers, volunteers and visitors; to be read in conjunction with WAG H&S Guidelines and Policy.
Archaeological sites can be dangerous!
Sites are usually in fields with fences and gates and sometimes animals.
Any equipment, if not properly used, can cause injury.
Spoil heaps too close to trenches can collapse.
Cuts and scrapes can get infected.
Insects and plants can sting.
Exposure to sun can cause damage to skin.
Site work can be hot and thirsty work.
How can you help reduce the risk?
Take care when accessing a site. If you don’t know how to get in, ask.
Don’t climb over barbed wire fences.
Watch out especially for cattle and sheep that might want to get out, or might take an unwelcome interest in you!
Be careful when handling tools and equipment. The Site Manager or assistant manager should show you how to use any equipment needed.
Don’t fool around on site.
If heavy equipment such as a mechanical digger is in use, or if you’re near people using picks or mattocks, wear a high visibility jacket and hard-hat.
Report any injury, bite or sting to the Site Manager, assistant SM or first-aider.
Wear clothing appropriate to the weather, strong shoes/boots and gloves.
Use sun cream and wear a hat in strong direct sunlight.
Have a supply of water or other drinks.
Have a supply of disinfectant wipes or gel.
Make sure the Site Manager has an emergency contact number for you.
ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY SITE MANAGER, ASSISTANT SITE MANAGER OR THEIR DEPUTIES.
