The weather forecast for tomorrow (according to both the Met Office and the BBC -- which makes a change, because for once they're both in agreement) is 'Overcast but dry'.

That means 'excavation weather' in my book (working on the assumption that both reports are correct, of course).

So, if I can't procure a lift I'll be catching the bus down to the site somewhere between 9 o'clock and 9.30 (hopefully).

I'd highly recommend turning up for tomorrow's dig to all our members for the following reasons:

1. We're subjected to a potential time limit for this excavation so we need to get digging as quickly as possible. The more diggers turn up, the more we can excavate.

2. This is good archaeology. (It's also guaranteed!) You don't get too many opportunities in life to excavate a prehistoric settlement (especially one as clearly defined as this) so it's worth putting on your wellies and making the effort I reckon.

3. At approximately 11 o'clock tomorrow morning there will be a large, hopefully-controlled explosion reasonably close to the site, which should make for interesting viewing.

Hope to see everyone there. (Bring spades, trowels, butties and binoculars.)

Brian

UPDATE: SUNDAY MORNING

True to form the weather forecast has changed overnight. As of 7.16 on Sunday morning the forecast reads 'Heavy Rain by 10 a.m.' Whether or not this'll actually be the case remains to be seen. Working on the assumption that the closer the forecasts get to the event the more accurate they're likely to be, however, it seems a bit pointless turning up at the site around 9.30 only to be drenched by 10.

Therefore, unless they change their minds again in the next hour or so, today's excavation will, unfortunately, have to be cancelled.

Weather forecasters, you've got to loathe 'em haven't y'?

Brian

Addendum

Well, the rain did arrive. Admittedly it was halfway through the afternoon and could hardly be classified as the 'incessant torrential downpour' forecast by the Met Office/BBC, but it did arrive, eventually.

Apologies to everyone who turned up at the designated site expecting a dig this morning (it's always wise to check your emails and/or this forum first thing on Sunday just in case). At least you got to see the Boiler House being blown up I suppose, which is more than I did. (We heard it in Fleetwood though. It must have been loud, that's all I can say.)

Apologies to everyone who didn't turn up at the designated site because they did read their Sunday morning emails. We could have had a good morning's digging there, I know, but trust me, I'll be penning a thank you letter to the bloke in charge of weekend weather forecasts shortly after tea -- I've done some research and, as far as I can gather, he used to be a retainer for the Greystoke family, stood about two and half feet tall in his socks, and was known only by his first name, Cheetah.

As a footnote to this episode (one of many such episodes so far this year, unfortunately), if anybody out there believes they can predict the Sunday forecast better than that skeletal old tart, Dianne Oxbury, (not forgetting her overpaid colleagues -- I'm working on the assumption that somebody with the intelligence of slime-mould upwards is probably reading this) please let me know. I'll even provide you with the coin to flip, if you want.

In the meantime, again many humble apologies for another wasted Sunday. Now I'm off to finish my bottle of scotch.

Brian
