Wyresdale Park

Doing a bit of mountain biking last week, I was passing Wyresdale Park, Scorton and decided to satisfy my curiosity about the place by riding up the drive to have a look. It`s a really impressive pile with a glorious outlook. I`ve tried googling it but apart from a little about the man who built it, there`s not much on & no photo. It looks as though it should have been a major factor in local life over the years - does anyone know anything interesting about it and who lives there now?

Phil,

No idea who lives there now. You could always try the Land Registry (costs about seven quid or something).

Apparently (Michelle's been researching here) the original owner of the estate on which Wyresdale Park was later built was the Duke of Hamilton, who sold the whole lot off in 1853 (due to personal embarrassment...the mind boggles) to Mr Peter Ormrod, the head of a Bolton banking firm. (This was along with Scorton and most of Nether Wyresdale.) Ormrod built Wyresdale Park itself in 1856 but it wasn't completed until 1865. Ormrod lived there until his death at the age of 80 in 1875, his widow remaining on at the same address until 1890.

Wyresdale Park then passed into the ownership of Colonel Cross Ormrod (Peter Ormrod's nephew) who lived there until he kicked the bucket in 1895, at which point Captain Peter Ormrod (the Colonel's son) took over.

This second Peter Ormrod was into deer hunting, fishing and hare coursing (sounds like a fun sort of bloke.)

After that, we haven't got a clue.

Apparently it`s now the family of a local (Fylde) businessman called Whewell who`s into huntin, shootin & fishin!
