So that's what a petard is? 'Hoist upon your petard' therefore meaning, literally, 'burnt by your own lit fart'. Every day is a learning experience.

Petomanie (with an acute accent on first 'e' and pronounced in a French sort of way) was an established entertainment formin late Victorian/ Edwardian times. I think it was favoured in France but the late Leonard Rossiter (Rising Damp) played the title role of 'The Petomane' in a TV comedy/drama some years ago. The real petomane's act included playing 'God Save the Queen' through his nether orifice. There was also a female petomane who was asked to prove that she didn't have some form of contraption under her skirt!

Dave,

I remember the Leonard Rossiter version well, especially Petomane's tragic end on stage when he went one quack too far and caused a prolapse. Fortunately they edited the shoehorn scene from the finished programme.
