I heard today that Richard Watson had sadly died. Richard was a fascinating bloke, steeped in local history and north-western architecture, and somebody we've often quoted in our own ramblings. I'll always remember the antiquated map he had on his wall showing the Fylde Coast separated from Ireland by 'St. George's Channel' -- a name we ought to bring back into use, I reckon (so much better sounding than the Irish Sea).

Richard Watson produced a huge body of work on local history, amongst which was his book for the Centre for North-West Regional Studies on 'Traditional Houses of the Fylde' -- a bible for people like me and Michelle, which is why we, naturally, own a copy. He was also an extremely pleasant and fascinating chap, and the Fylde's local history community from now on will, unfortunately, be missing another vital component.
