My daughter wants to work in the archeology/geology field when she leaves school and is now in year 10 at Unity College.

She is looking at doing her work experience in these fields, however she is unable to find any association details to provide her with the week experience coming up at the beginning of July this year.

If anyone could give me details of who I could contact to get this arranged then I would be very grateful as this is a career she has always wanted.

Thank you

Debbie

I'm assuming you refer to Unity College Blackpool? Your school careers /PSHE teacher should be able to help.

You'll appreciate that archaeology and geology careers are generally open only to those who have taken degrees and maybe further specialisation in those subjects although sometimes there may be job opportunities in supporting admin work that can be entered at a younger age. Good qualifications will be essential. (I'm a former Careers Adviser and have a daughter working as an archaeologist and a son who's studing for a geology degree!)

As a first step I would contact the Council For British Archaeology local Young Archaeologist Club - there is a branch based at Kendal museum and another at Lancaster (run by the PAS Finds Liaison Officer) and generally the CBA website is full of useful info.

http://www.britarch.ac.uk/getinvolved

You could also approach organisations such as Oxford Archaeology North based at Lancaster or local museums and local authorities may have someone responsible for archaeology but generally these are now usually part of the Planning Department.

Hope this helps

Should also have said that we have provided practical dig experience for students from Blackpool Sixth Form college some of whom have gone on to Degrees in Archaeology.

We meet on 3rd Wednesday of the month i.e. today at 7.00pm at Farmer Parr's on Fleetwood Rd Thornton. Usually in th eportakabin behind cafe. Guest are welcome.
