Well, what a day!

8 hardy archaeologists turned up for Day 1 of the SLIM DIG and what a day we've had. Firstly the weather has been superb all day, secondly, the cattle kept a discreet distance after an early shooing by Mr Berry and then... the trenches!

3 x 1 metre trenches were opened and excavated down to the compacted 'haematite' layer. This is understood to be the original surface of the drumlin left after the retreat of the ice some 12,000 years ago - i.e. it's very old. We are used to finding odd dents, holes etc but across two trenches and linking with a 4th trench excavated some time ago, we uncovered a shallow man-made channel of a flattened 'u' shaped section that continued in a slight curve over 2 metres (in today's trenches but at least a further 0.5 metre in earlier trench). This feature appears to continue into an unexcavated area so this will be the target for tomorrow. A couple of interesting metal objects were retrieved from the spoil and there was the usual few pieces of daub.

DAY 2 will continue but we've agreed to meet from 10.00. If you can make it we'd be pleased to see you.
