Minutes

Present:

K Emery, P Emery D Hammond D Hampson
T Lightbown B Rigby J Roberts J Schofield
E Shone F Smith G Thornton S Tingle

Officers: Chair Chris Clayton, Treasurer Gary Thornton, Secretary Dave Hampson.

1 Chairman welcome: Chris welcomed members to the meeting.

2 Apologies for absence: Carlo Ricco, Hilary Ricco, Seb Whalley.

3 Minutes of AGM 20 April 2011: The minutes were approved as correct record..

4 Matters Arising: None

5 Chairman’s Report 2011 - 2012: Chris reported that the two Big Digs had been well attended and in particular the dig in Kirkham (Frank’s garden) had produced literally hundreds of finds. He expressed thanks to those who participated and to Frank and Cheryl for their hospitality.

The second Big Dig was not quite as successful. Returning to the top of Bourne Hill allowed us to check out some observed anomalies. Excavation produced little except in NW corner the ridge around the top where some evidence of burning was observed. A piece of clay pipe was also retrieved – with obvious dating to post Elizabeth I. There was a disappointing lack of evidence for Roman-British occupation or use of the hill. Weekend digs had continued through the season with the aim of obtaining evidence of post-holes on the opposite side of the feature previously exposed.

Links had continued with Blackpoll VIth Form College which had provided students to take part in digs and tyere had been very positive feedback that one student had referred to experience with Wyre Archaeology in a successful application for Oxford University.
In addition to the excavation activities there had been a number of interesting talks delivered by, amongst others, Peter Iles, Dot Boughton and Barbara Laing.

Chris closed by thanking the Treasurer and Secretary for their contribution over the past year and giving particular thanks to Hilary and Barbara for their continued fund-raising.

Members proposed and passed a vote of thanks to Chris for his chairmanship.

6 Treasurer’s Report: Gary distributed a copy of the society’s balance sheet which showed a net income of £1082.37 and expenditure of £654.56. Gary commented that there had been no increase in our insurance premium and that the balance to be carried forward to 2012 was a very healthy £427.81. The Treasurer’s report was accepted.

7 Subscriptions 2011-12: The Executive Committee recommended that subs be retained at current level viz. £10 per individual member and £15 per couple. Accepted.

8 Election of Officers 2011 - 2012:

Chair: David Hammond
Vice Chair: Chris Clayton
Secretary: Dave Hampson
Treasurer: GaryThornton

Committee Members: Frank Smith, Brian Hughes, Ken Emery, Barbara Culshaw-Phillips, Brian Rigby, Dave Berry.

9 Resolutions submitted by members: Brian proposed that an approach be made to the Lancashire Archaeological Society to discuss a closer affiliation with this group. After discussion it was agreed that discussion could take place with the proviso that we retain our own identity.

10 AOB: Barbara informed members of a Car Boot Sale taking place on 20 May. Brian gave a brief update on recent work on Bourne Hill.

11 Date of Next Annual General Meeting: Wednesday 17April 2013
