Hi all

Does anybody remember the large house that used to stand on the corner of school rd, Thornton it had a great orchard and consevatory on the side. All the land that is now occupied by the bungalow's was the garden and orchard. I have looked for info in the net about it but never found anything. just some aerial photos from the 1940's :( and the 1960's. I used to play in the garden in summer and feast on all the fruit hahaa, when i was a lot younger and the house was empty.

John,

Presumably we're talking about the corner opposite Baines school here? Can't say as I remember it myself, but I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any information and/or photographs for you.

Okay...it's Sunday afternoon in the middle of winter and there was nothing worth buying from the antique's fair at the Marine Hall, so we had a quick scout around and found our 1913 map of Thornton. (Yes, we know you're not that old John, but we haven't got a map from the 1960s.) Anyhow, take a gander at this:

Now, working on the assumption that no drastic changes had taken place between Edwardian times and the days you went scrumping, it would appear that the most likely candidate was Thornton Lodge. Unfortunately, there were two Thornton Lodges. The one on the map, and one next to where the Illawalla would eventually be built, where nowadays...er...Thornton Lodge stands. Does this make any sense?

Regardless...we have a photograph. We're just not sure which Thornton Lodge it is:

The question is, John, does it ring any bells?

Thanks for that Brian, It was not that house sorry. if you look on the map its the plot next door just on the corner of school rd. the house was painted all white and 3 floors high from what i can remember. it also had a few brick buildings potting shed etc. Ps I cant view any images on IMAGESHACK they just appear blank.

John,

That'll be where the 'Nursery' was in 1913 then? I'm assuming it was a plant nursery and not something connected to Baines Endowed. I need a 1960s map I reckon. I'll keep on looking for a photograph though...you never know, something might turn up.

As for Image Shack, I haven't got a clue what's wrong with it. Last night I checked into the forum to discover the whole lot had been converted into nothing more than HTML code. That's the problem with using free sites...they're a bit on the rubbish side. (And I notice the adverts on this board are piling up thicker and faster these days as well.)

Right...hold on, how about this? It's School Road and it's got a big house on it...somewhere...behind the trees...you could see it before I shrunk it down to fit on the board anyway.

Wrong side of the road though, isn't it?

As you've probably gathered, I've just nicked this from Phil's site...and I suspect you've checked all his photos. I'll keep looking...

Ah, result! (How's that for a shot in the dark?) If we get any more detail or anything at any point we'll let you know.
