 Post subject: Draft Horses and Gradients

I`ve seen Roman fords in this area where the approach roads are very steep, say 16% gradient. Shear Brow in Blackburn is claimed to have been part of the road from Manchester to Ribchester and also reaches 16%. The typical Roman horse drawn cart would carry about a tonne and weigh another half tonne so how would they get up such slopes?
