Post subject:  Staksteads
I am trying to find a bungalow in thornton, called Staksteads it was named after the place Stakstead nr Bacup. Where the builder and quarry master who owned/built all of the houses in Burn Naze in the 1890's. I am sure i have seen this name on a gate post but cant remember where if anyone has seen it or knows where it is plz let me know thanks

Probably the best person to ask about that is Melanie (a.k.a. History Hunter) from the Thornton Through Time website. Hopefully she'll drop by here and notice your request, but if she doesn't you could always drop her line/ ask her directly at http://thorntonthroughtime.blogspot.com. If nothing else, she could keep a lookout for you on her daily travels.

I have already asked melanie, i spotted on the thornton web site the Directory of thornton for 1910 and it listed "Henry Heys" of Stakstead Bungalow.

That buggers that idea up then.

I've had a gander at the tithemap but can't find any mention of Henry Heys (although, unless he actually owned any fields at the time that the map was drawn up, that's not particularly surprising).

There is mention of a Stack Yard on the corner of Woodland Avenue and Lawson's Road...although the link is probably tenuous at best.

Shall ask around...but don't hold your breath.

I don't remember being contacted about Stackstead Bungalow at all. A John contacted me about a white house on the corner with an orchard but I might be mistaken.

It stood or stands on Victoria Road and is listed on the 1901 Census. Here is the list of houses it appears amongst .. am not sure which way we are going up Victoria Road.

Hodgsons Farm
Ramper Road
Lytham Villas
Lytham Villas
Rossendale Bungalow
Stackstead Bungalow - Henry Heys (61), Stone Quarry Master, Haslingden, Lancs
Ramper Road Cottage
Ramper Road Cottage
House/shop - unoccupied
Fern Cottage
May Villas

Unfortunately I can't place Lytham Villas or Fern Cottage. They are not always in order as the enumerators broke off to go down side streets but the section below Ramper Road (above) looks like a run to me.

There is also a Herbert Heys (24) staying as a visitor at a Grocers Shop on Ramper Road. His occupation is Stone Quarry Manager and he is from Stackstead, Lancs which seems like a coincidence to me.

I will have a look on Victoria Rd this weekend, I have a large document re Henry Heys and his sons, and the deeds of my house lists all the houses he owned in Burn Naze from Heys street to Edward st.

Is was me that asked you about the House on school Rd/ in thornton with an orchard in the grounds.

No probs .. I haven't got the greatest memory it has to be said. I'm sure I've seen Lytham Villa somewhere and will keep my eyes peeled. If you do spot any of them I can look at the 1912 map for you to try and rule out the houses which weren't there then and narrow it down a bit.

Edit: Just to add by the 1912 OS map because of the number of new houses they are not individually named but if you get one either side -ish I could probably work it out.

Have looked when I was out today. The red dot on the map is Lytham Villas (next to the Hairdressers). To carry on the list from the census above .. there are 2 May Villas (one is listed above) and the next one is Rose Villa. Rose Villa is between the church and the red line on the map (I was driving and can't remember exactly which one.

So after all that drivel Stackstead Bungalow is between the red dot and the red line. I asked at the Bungalow on the corner of Sandringham but they haven't been there long and didn't know if it had a name .. this one would be my bet.

Im a bit late on this one but stacksteads Bungalow is now an old folks home, its sandwiched between Briar road and sandringham avenue,Between the workshop and the Ashley cons, it has an old stone name plaque at the back gates ,hope this helps

Thanks for that jetman, I also will go take a look this weekend, I had already looked at the post of the front gate but never thought to look at the side entrance. I knew i had seen it before somewhere.

The name was on the stone gate posts of the origial house and a new plaque was made when the house was changed to a care home.

hi all do you know ive had half the cabbies in thornton looking for staksteads bungalow , several said they remembered the name but couldnt think where it was . ive lived about 100yds away for the last thirty years or so . and missed the bugger !!! wot a dope !! regards andy
