Minutes 21 November & 19 December


Minutes of Wyre Archaeology Group Meeting 21 November 2012
Present: P Ashman, D Berry, B Culshaw-Phillips, K Emery, Pat Emery, D Hammond, D Hampson, H Ricco, B Rigby, Ed Shone, FSmith, G Thornton.
Guests: J Butler, K Ashton.
1. Chairman welcome: Dave Hammond welcomed everyone and especially guests to the meeting. For the benefit of guests, members introduced themselves.

2. Apologies for absence: received from Chris Clayton, Carlo Ricco, Dominic Whalley, Seb Whalley, Ted Lightbown.

3. Minutes of last meeting: Minutes of 17 October were approved as correct.

4. Matters arising: a) Christmas Dinner – Members were in favour of booking the Christmas Dinner with James Parr. It was suggested that 15 meals be ordered and that a fixed price be agreed with James. Secretary to follow this up.

5. Treasurer’s Report: Gary reported that still stood at £821.21.

6. Executive Committee: None

7. Correspondence: Secretary reported that he had prepared a press release which had been emailed to Blackpool Gazette in response to a request for information about our excavation on Bourne Hill. There had been no further contact with the newspaper. Press release was circulated for members.

8. Excavation Update: Brian R presented a brief description of recent work on Bourne Hill. Additional trenches had been opened over the period 21 and 22 October (G2, H2 and G4, H4). There were a few finds of undiagnostic pot, burnt daub/brick but a number of unusual features had been exposed on the hard surface of the trenches including a fairly straight channel, semi-circular in section that terminated in a shallow bowl-like depression. A number of possible stake-holes and an area of burned material were also revealed. The team also used the rhino shelter for the first time, although the threatened rain held off.


9. AOB: a) Dave B described work on building a dedicated website. b) There followed an open discussion on potential future activities

10. Date of next meeting: Wednesday 19 Decemberr at 7.00pm in Cafe
